HEMI Camshaft Failure: Symptoms, Causes, and Repair Options

Camshaft failure is one of the most serious internal engine problems found in some 5.7L and 6.4L HEMI engines. It often begins with a ticking noise, rough idle, misfire, or loss of power, but it can eventually lead to extensive metal contamination and complete engine failure.

The camshaft controls when the intake and exhaust valves open and close. Each camshaft lobe works with a lifter, pushrod, rocker arm, and valve to regulate airflow through the engine. When a camshaft lobe becomes worn, damaged, or flattened, the affected valve can no longer operate correctly.

HEMI camshaft damage is frequently associated with lifter failure. A damaged or seized roller lifter may stop rotating properly and begin grinding against the camshaft lobe. As the damage progresses, metal particles can circulate through the lubrication system and affect bearings, oil passages, and other internal components.

Common Symptoms of HEMI Camshaft Failure

Camshaft damage may begin gradually, and the early symptoms can resemble ignition, fuel, or electrical problems. For this reason, a proper mechanical inspection is essential.

Common warning signs include:

  • Persistent ticking or tapping from the engine 
  • Rough idle 
  • Engine misfire 
  • Loss of power 
  • Poor acceleration 
  • Check engine light 
  • Cylinder-specific misfire codes 
  • Reduced fuel efficiency 
  • Engine vibration 
  • Metallic debris in the engine oil 
  • Abnormal valvetrain movement 
  • Low compression in the affected cylinder 

A vehicle may continue to run even when one camshaft lobe is severely worn. However, continued driving can spread metal throughout the engine and turn a valvetrain repair into a complete engine rebuild.

What Causes HEMI Camshaft Failure?

 

Failed or Seized Roller Lifters

One of the most common causes of HEMI camshaft damage is a failed roller lifter.

The roller at the bottom of the lifter is designed to rotate smoothly against the camshaft lobe. If the roller bearing wears out, becomes damaged, or stops rotating, it may drag across the camshaft instead of rolling.

This metal-to-metal contact can quickly wear down the camshaft lobe. Once the lobe loses its original shape, the valve will not open as far as it should, reducing airflow and causing a misfire or loss of power.

Because lifter and camshaft damage are closely connected, replacing only one damaged component without inspecting the entire valvetrain may result in repeated failure.


Lubrication Problems

The camshaft and lifters depend on a consistent supply of clean engine oil.

Low oil pressure, dirty oil, incorrect oil viscosity, restricted oil passages, or extended oil-change intervals can reduce lubrication between moving parts. Over time, inadequate lubrication may accelerate wear on the camshaft lobes, lifter rollers, bearings, and other internal components.

Possible lubrication-related problems include:

  • Low engine oil level 
  • Excessively dirty or degraded oil 
  • Restricted oil filter 
  • Oil pump wear 
  • Internal oil passage restrictions 
  • Excessive bearing clearance 
  • Oil contamination 
  • Incorrect engine oil viscosity 

An oil pressure warning or repeated lifter noise should never be ignored.


Internal Engine Wear

High-mileage engines may develop excessive clearance between internal components. Worn bearings can reduce oil pressure and limit the amount of lubrication reaching the upper portion of the engine.

When camshaft failure occurs together with low oil pressure, bearing damage, or metal contamination, replacing only the camshaft and lifters may not provide a reliable long-term repair.


Heat and Operating Conditions

Excessive engine heat, repeated overheating, poor maintenance, and prolonged operation with an active misfire may contribute to accelerated internal wear.

Heavy-duty use, extended idling, towing, and frequent stop-and-go driving can also place additional stress on the valvetrain and lubrication system. However, the exact cause can only be determined after inspecting the engine and its internal components.

HEMI Camshaft Failure vs. Normal HEMI Tick

Not every ticking sound means the camshaft has failed.

A HEMI engine may produce a ticking noise because of:

  • Normal fuel injector operation 
  • Exhaust manifold leaks 
  • Broken exhaust manifold bolts 
  • Low engine oil 
  • Hydraulic lifter problems 
  • Camshaft damage 
  • Connecting rod or bearing damage 

An exhaust manifold tick is often louder during a cold start and may become quieter as the engine warms up. Camshaft or lifter noise is more likely to remain present and may be accompanied by a misfire, rough idle, or power loss.

Because different problems can produce similar sounds, replacing parts based only on the noise is not recommended.

How HEMI Camshaft Failure Is Diagnosed

A complete diagnosis should determine whether the problem is limited to the valvetrain or has affected the rest of the engine.

Our inspection process may include:

  • Scanning for diagnostic trouble codes 
  • Identifying cylinder-specific misfires 
  • Listening to the engine at different RPM levels 
  • Checking engine oil level and condition 
  • Measuring engine oil pressure 
  • Performing compression or cylinder leakage testing 
  • Inspecting rocker arm and valve movement 
  • Removing valve covers for valvetrain inspection 
  • Inspecting the camshaft and lifters 
  • Cutting open the oil filter to look for metal 
  • Inspecting internal components for contamination and wear 

Reduced rocker arm movement on one cylinder may indicate that a camshaft lobe has worn down. However, the engine must be inspected carefully before the full extent of the damage can be confirmed.

Can a Damaged HEMI Camshaft Be Repaired?

 In some cases, the camshaft and lifters can be replaced without rebuilding the complete engine. This may be possible when the problem is diagnosed early and there is no significant bearing damage, low oil pressure, cylinder wall damage, or widespread metal contamination.

A limited valvetrain repair may include:

  • Camshaft replacement 
  • Lifter replacement 
  • Inspection of pushrods and rocker arms 
  • Replacement of required gaskets and seals 
  • Timing system inspection 
  • Oil system cleaning 
  • Oil and filter replacement 

However, simply replacing the camshaft and failed lifters is not always the best solution.

If metal from the damaged components has circulated throughout the engine, other parts may already be affected. The oil pump, crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, main bearings, cylinder walls, and oil passages should be evaluated before the engine is reassembled.

When Is a Complete HEMI Engine Rebuild Recommended?

A complete engine rebuild may be the more dependable option when inspection reveals:

  • Severe camshaft lobe damage 
  • Multiple failed lifters 
  • Metal contamination throughout the engine 
  • Low oil pressure caused by internal wear 
  • Connecting rod or main bearing damage 
  • Crankshaft damage 
  • Cylinder wall wear or scoring 
  • Excessive oil consumption 
  • Previous overheating 
  • High-mileage internal wear 
  • Additional knocking or bearing noise 

During an engine rebuild, the engine is completely disassembled, cleaned, measured, and inspected. Required components are repaired, machined, or replaced before the engine is professionally reassembled.

This approach addresses the entire condition of the engine rather than replacing only the most visibly damaged parts.

Should You Continue Driving With Camshaft Failure?

Driving with a damaged camshaft or failed lifter is not recommended.

As the camshaft lobe continues to wear, additional metal may enter the engine oil. This contamination can damage bearings, restrict oil passages, affect the oil pump, and increase the cost of the repair.

Stop driving and schedule an inspection when the engine has:

  • A constant metallic tick 
  • A flashing check engine light 
  • Severe misfires 
  • Low oil pressure 
  • Significant power loss 
  • Metal in the engine oil 
  • Heavy knocking 
  • Increasing engine noise 

Early diagnosis may make the difference between a valvetrain repair and a complete engine rebuild.
