HEMI Tick Noise: Common Causes, Warning Signs, and Repair Options

A ticking noise coming from a HEMI engine can be harmless, but it can also be an early warning sign of a serious mechanical problem. Owners of Dodge, Ram, Chrysler, and Jeep vehicles equipped with 5.7L or 6.4L HEMI engines commonly describe this sound as a light tapping, clicking, or metallic ticking that becomes noticeable during startup, while idling, or when accelerating.

Not every HEMI tick has the same cause. Some noises may come from normal fuel injector operation, while others may indicate an exhaust leak, low oil pressure, worn lifters, or camshaft damage.

Correctly identifying the source of the noise is extremely important. Continuing to drive with a damaged lifter or camshaft can turn a repairable problem into complete engine failure.

What Does a HEMI Tick Sound Like?

A HEMI tick is usually described as a repetitive tapping or clicking sound that follows engine speed. As the RPM increases, the ticking often becomes faster.

The sound may be most noticeable:

  • During a cold start 
  • While the engine is idling 
  • After the engine reaches operating temperature 
  • During acceleration 
  • Near one side of the cylinder head 
  • Around the exhaust manifold area 

The location, temperature, frequency, and intensity of the noise can help determine whether it is related to the valvetrain, exhaust system, lubrication system, or fuel injectors.

Common Causes of HEMI Tick Noise

 

1. Exhaust Manifold Leak

One of the most common causes of a ticking sound on a HEMI engine is an exhaust manifold leak.

Broken exhaust manifold bolts or a damaged manifold gasket can allow exhaust gases to escape near the cylinder head. This often creates a sharp ticking noise that is louder when the engine is cold.

As the engine warms up and the metal components expand, the noise may become quieter or temporarily disappear.

An exhaust manifold tick does not usually mean the engine needs to be rebuilt. However, the manifold, gasket, and mounting bolts should be inspected and repaired before the leak becomes worse.


2. Worn or Failed Lifters

A failed hydraulic roller lifter is one of the most serious causes of HEMI tick noise.

The lifters ride directly against the camshaft lobes and transfer camshaft movement to the valves. When a roller lifter becomes damaged, seized, or worn, it may begin producing a metallic tapping sound.

A damaged lifter can also wear down the corresponding camshaft lobe. Once this happens, the valve may no longer open correctly, causing poor engine performance and additional internal damage.

Common symptoms of HEMI lifter failure include:

  • Constant metallic ticking 
  • Engine misfires 
  • Rough idle 
  • Loss of power 
  • Check engine light 
  • Cylinder-specific misfire codes 
  • Metal particles in the engine oil 
  • Camshaft lobe damage 

Lifter noise should never be ignored. Early diagnosis may help prevent more extensive engine damage.


3. Camshaft Damage

Camshaft failure is often closely related to lifter failure.

When a lifter roller stops rotating correctly, it can grind against the camshaft and gradually destroy the surface of the cam lobe. This reduces valve lift and prevents the affected cylinder from operating correctly.

A damaged camshaft may cause ticking, misfires, reduced power, rough running, and metal contamination inside the lubrication system.

Replacing only the damaged lifter without inspecting the camshaft can result in repeated failure. The entire valvetrain and lubrication system should be carefully evaluated.

4. Low Oil Pressure

HEMI engines rely on proper oil pressure to lubricate the camshaft, lifters, crankshaft bearings, and other internal components.

Low oil pressure can prevent hydraulic lifters from operating correctly and may create ticking or tapping noises from the top of the engine.

Possible causes of low oil pressure include:

  • Low engine oil level 
  • Incorrect oil viscosity 
  • A restricted oil filter 
  • Oil pump wear 
  • Excessive bearing clearance 
  • Internal engine wear 
  • Oil passage restrictions 
  • Oil contamination 

A low oil pressure warning should be treated seriously. Continuing to operate the engine without adequate lubrication may cause camshaft, lifter, bearing, or crankshaft damage.


5. Normal Fuel Injector Noise

Modern fuel injectors naturally create a light clicking sound while operating. This noise is normally consistent across all cylinders and does not cause misfires, loss of power, or warning lights.

Fuel injector noise is typically lighter and more uniform than the metallic tapping caused by a damaged lifter.

A professional inspection can help distinguish normal injector operation from a developing mechanical problem.


6. Internal Bearing Damage

A deeper tapping or knocking noise may come from connecting rod bearings, main bearings, wrist pins, or other rotating components inside the engine.

Unlike a light valvetrain tick, bearing noise often becomes louder when the engine is under load or during acceleration.

This condition may also be accompanied by:

  • Low oil pressure 
  • Metal particles in the oil 
  • Heavy knocking 
  • Engine vibration 
  • Reduced performance 
  • Complete engine seizure 

When internal bearing damage is present, a complete HEMI engine rebuild may be the most reliable repair option.

Is It Safe to Drive With a HEMI Tick?

That depends on the source of the noise.

A minor exhaust manifold leak may not immediately damage the internal engine. However, a tick caused by a failed lifter, damaged camshaft, low oil pressure, or worn bearing can quickly become much more serious.

Stop driving and schedule an inspection when the ticking noise is accompanied by:

  • A flashing check engine light 
  • Low oil pressure 
  • Engine misfires 
  • Rough running 
  • Significant power loss 
  • Metallic debris in the oil 
  • Heavy knocking 
  • Increasing noise 

Driving the vehicle with an active lifter or camshaft failure may spread metal throughout the engine and damage additional components.

A proper diagnosis should identify the source of the noise before parts are replaced.

  • Listening to the engine at different temperatures and RPM levels 
  • Scanning the vehicle for diagnostic trouble codes 
  • Checking engine oil level and condition 
  • Measuring oil pressure 
  • Inspecting the exhaust manifolds and bolts

  • Inspecting the valvetrain 
  • Checking the camshaft and lifters 
  • Examining the oil and filter for metal contamination 

This process helps determine whether the engine needs a minor repair, a valvetrain repair, or a complete rebuild.

Repair or Rebuild?

The correct solution depends on the condition of the engine and how long the vehicle has been driven with the ticking noise.

A localized exhaust leak may require only manifold repairs. A lifter problem discovered early may be repairable before severe damage occurs.

However, engine rebuilding may be recommended when there is:

  • Extensive camshaft damage 
  • Multiple failed lifters 
  • Metal contamination throughout the engine 
  • Low oil pressure caused by internal wear 
  • Connecting rod or crankshaft bearing damage 
  • Cylinder wall damage 
  • Excessive oil consumption 
  • Previous overheating 
  • High-mileage internal wear 

A complete rebuild allows the engine to be disassembled, inspected, cleaned, precision machined, and reassembled with the necessary replacement components.
